My date is a big Star Wars fan. I haven’t seen the movies, so yesterday we watched the first episode: The Phantom Menace. This is the only part I have watched so far, so I am going to write this post based on this knowledge. Let’s talk about the problems of Star Wars Episode 1. SPOILER!
This movie was a huge disappointment for me. It didn’t have a flow, the dialogues were mostly grey… The race was my favorite part. But the characters were so unifacial. OMG. Everyone had one feature. My biggest disappointment was Amidala. She could have been a strong woman. She was the main female character. And what was she like? She was only driven by her feelings. She sacrificed so many people and living creatures to carry out her plan. Why was it that way? Why was the only female character like this? I am not a huge feminist, but this pisses me off.
Anyway, let’s take a step back. What is the movie about? It is about good and evil. This is the biggest problem for me. There is no such thing as that. Everyone has good and bad in them. Black-and-white thinking is one of the cognitive biases. I am not going to be popular with this opinion, but I think The Phantom Menace (with its few strengths) is a badly structured movie. Its base is not strong enough to build on a good storyline.
After we finished the movie, I got so angry. I love movies, and this is a cult film, isn’t it? The actors and actresses did a good job. The view is sometimes really beautiful. But that is not enough to make a good movie. The storytelling also has some issues. For example, I thought that the Council of the Jedi was inconsistent, which broke the storyline. Then it turned out that the director forgot to tell us the whole prophecy.
The story had its opportunities. I am not a fan of reboots, but who knows, it might help now.
