SPOILER!!!
The following writing could ruin the watching experience – first watch the movie then I look forward to seeing you.
Wild Tales is an anthology movie, which consists of six short films. It is an absurd and violent piece of art. The shorts definitely have one thing in common: revenge. Someone always gets their vengeance.
The first one: „Pasternak”
As we follow the lady getting on the airplane, probably we don’t know yet what to expect from this movie. While the lady and the movie critic speaks, the captain closes the door of the cockpit. He was such insignificant, walked to the cockpit while the others were talking… I didn’t even remember seeing him, until I rewatched the scene. I was so wrong, he was the link among the passengers. Every minute a new person joins to the conversation, and the events start to get absolutely weird – until to the point it turns out, Gabriel Pasternak, the man who can be described as their foe, is flying the plane. The airplane is heading towards two elderly people. Can you guess their identity? First vengeance is done.
„The Rats”
What would you do if you met someone who was the cause of a loved one’s death? The waitress has to face with this situation, at her workplace. A guest is the bad guy. The cook has a stable opinion about the topic. Rat poison into his food. For me the most interesting part of this story is the difference between the cook and the waitress. The waitress has all the reasons to take revenge. She is furious but doesn’t know what to do. The cook recommends her the poison. She is against it, still doesn’t check the food. When she goes back to the kitchen, it gets clear to her that the food is poisoned. Then the guest’s kid arrive, and she tries to stop them in a strange way. The guest gets arrogant again and the cook stabs him. Police comes and takes away the cook, the boy and the waitress are the survivors of this nightmare.
So ethics… What would you do in a situation like that? Death Note came to my mind. Would you take away bad people’ lives if you didn’t get caught? Where does eye for an eye lead? Is it possible to forgive?
„The Strongest”
I think this part doesn’t really have a deeper meaning. Two men on the road hold a size contest. No one survives.
„Little Bomb”
So this is familiar with Michael Douglas’s Falling down. But it was long ago I watched that movie, so I can’t compare them now.
Anyway there’s this guy who lives for his job but also has a family. The little girl has her birthday. But the man after he bought the cake and realized that his car has been carried away does some stupid shit. Instead of going home with a taxi, he tries to get back his car and wants gratification. He just partly succeeds. Of course he’s late from the party. They get separated, he get fired, then he takes revenge on the parking company. He gets back his family although he is in prison.
This story is absurd because of the end. But during the watching I felt like I never met such an asshole in my whole life. And he gets to be celebrated for that. Life is not fair.
„The Proposal”
This one is tough. A rich man’s kid hits a pregnant woman with his father’s car. He doesn’t stop. The embryo and the woman both die. The family agrees about asking the janitor to take the blame. Everyone gets paid, including the district attorney. Till this point everything happens in the rich man’s house. Journalists and protesters are in front of the house. Police and detective arrive. The attorney takes out the suspect. And the furious husband kills him.
I believe you can not measure a person’s life in money. Lives should be sacred. But they aren’t. And I guess they have never been that.
„Till Death Do Us Apart”
Last but not least the wedding story. What would a bride do if she found out that his man has cheated? Oh man… I think most of us would do something else but it is cinema. I think this short is worthy to close the movie.
So what does the bride do? First she runs up to the roof of the hotel. There she meets a cook who is on his cigarette break. The bridegroom just arrives there to catch them fucking. When the bride realizes it she gives a speech. After she goes down to continue the party. The groom wants to cut it off but he can’t. Some other incidents happen but in the end to everybody’s shock love conquers all.
For me the last short was the best. I mean if there are hidden, buried conflicts you shouldn’t marry. The woman’s revenge was a bit too much but I loved every seconds of this part. They needed some kind of relief. They got it.
If you watched the movie, please share your opinion in the comments – if you’d like:)
Warm wishes
